General Meeting April 23, 2019
all things gardening

Porter and Luke’s restaurant was the site of our April General Meeting. Good food, lots of friendship and great gardening tips were what the members in attendance enjoyed.

The restaurant was full of garden club members and all seem to have a good time.

Club members were given time before the meeting started to talk with each other and enjoy the refreshments.

Carmen Waring, club president, greeted the members, led the meeting and started out by presenting special awards to three of our hard-working members.

Maureen (Mo) Brennan McConnell was recognized for her work on the recent Easter egg hunt. Mo is a very artistic person and it showed in the beauty of that event. Children dressed in their finest searching for prizes, and Easter Bunny for picture taking, a perfect venue (Wally Pontiff Playground), songs from a barbershop quartet and other touches provided by Mo and her team made for a very special day.

Anna Borden, Director of the Arts Festival, received an award and accolades from the club on the first Old Metairie Garden Club Arts Festival. What an amazing event that was, covering an entire city block with interesting artwork on display and for sale. The festival was held at the brand-new Linear Park on Canal Street at Focis Street. The park was so new that the ribbon cutting was held at the event.

Morgan Duhon | Old Metairie Garden Club

Morgan Rathke, Director of Movie Nights, while not able to attend the meeting, was present an award in her absence. Morgan was honored by the club for the hard work and the amazing success she has had in putting on our very popular movie nights in the park. Bad weather forced the cancellation of the last movie night but hopefully, it will be rescheduled. Old Metairie residents seem to enjoy bringing their families to the Bayou Metairie Park to watch family movies under the stars. We are all so proud of Morgan and the results of her hard work.

One of the treats of the night was the food provided by the club and served at every table. Porter and Luke’s is known for good food and especially for the delicious appetizers which we all enjoyed.

Our speaker for the night was Kenny Rabelais of the Plant Gallery. He brought samples of plants and after speaking about them gave them to members of the club.

We all learned what to plant, what not to plant, when and where to plant, how to keep the plants healthy, when and how to fertilize and how to troubleshoot problems with our plants. It was a very educational evening especially for an audience of plant enthusiast.

Keep an eye on our website and on Facebook for upcoming meetings as each of these gatherings should have interesting speakers.
